Jazz Concert In Nogales
As part of an effort to increase public diplomacy in northern Sonora, Consulate Nogales hosted the award-winning University of Arizona Jazz Ensemble on January 21. The ensemble wowed a large crowd (estimated at nearly 1,000) at the Nogales Mall, marking one of the largest cultural outreach events since the consulate reopened in 1998. The 19-member ensemble, led by nationally-renowned professor Moises Paiwonsky, performed for more than two hours and was very well received by the media, city officials, and all in attendance. Approximately 1,000 attendees, including city officials and members of the media enjoyed a consulate-sponsored jazz concert Saturday afternoon at the Nogales Mall. The University of Arizona Jazz Ensemble provided excellent exposure to American music by playing a wide variety of hits including “Always and Forever”, “Here’s That Rainy Day” and “America the Beautiful” while a DVD of American scenery played in the background. The University of Arizona Jazz Ensemble is internationally recognized for excellence.
In the 1980's, the band was hired to tour with Dizzy Gillespie, a tour that exposed to the students the great teaching expertise that Dizzy had at his command. Since then, the band has backed up some of the most high-profile and legendary jazz artists of our time including Bill Watrous, Bobby Shew, John Fedchock, Brian Lynch, Chris Potter, and many more. Most recently, the group undertook a groundbreaking, two-week performance and educational tour throughout China. A video of the performance can be found by clicking here.
